anyone who knows me, will know of my love for Ercol furniture. back in early 2008 whilst still at university is when i discovered the Ercol studio couch. now you may find this an odd way to discover such a fabulous piece of furniture but, it was whilst watching the 1st series of "Being Human" this was the couch that George, Mitchel & Annie had in their flat. i knew from that first glance of this couch that it was "the couch of my dreams"! so off i went researching who made it and when, and obviously Ercol was what bounced back from my Google search results!

The studio couch was designed by Ercols founder, Lucian Ercolani. Launched in the late 1950's, and was renowned for being highly functional, acting as both a bed and a large family sized sofa. featuring steam bent arms & made from solid elm & beech this studio couch really is an iconic piece from Ercol's furniture range. i believe it certainly stands the test of time in design, functionality and style, and i'm sure many others would agree!

want one for yourself? well here are a few ways in which you can snap up a Studio couch! be prepared to pay anything from £100 for an original frame that needs work doing to it, to a ready to use Re-issue from £1,600.

Ercol // obviosuly the best place to start! you can buy the Re-issue of the couch in many stain colour options and over 100 fabric choices!

Ebay // a great place to start your search especially if you are after an original.

Gumtree // another great place to pick up an original couch

Auctions //  i love a good auction and they have proved to be very successful places to pick up Ercol furniture, you never know you might be lucky enough to find the couch in one!

Re-sellers // there are many companies who also stock the studio couch, these are just a handful - twentytwentyone  //  Heals // Utility

............ and did i buy my dream sofa? indeed i did, last summer on our return from China! it was about time we grew up and had our very own sofa : ) "my dream sofa"!

  1. Thanks for your kind words about the studio couch. Have you seen it in the latest Timorous Beasties blotch fabric? The studio couch also featured on The House the 50s Built where Brendan Walker made foam interiors for the seat cushions.

I would love the studio couch but would have to buy a bigger house first, I also remember seeing it on Being Human. And if you get chance to watch The House the 50s Build, do its amazing, I basically wanted all of it!

i couldn't agree more, Ercol furniture is most definitely timeless & beautiful of course! i hadn't heard of "Freegle" till now, i've used "Freecycle" in the past" which i believe is very similar : ) how lucky of you to come across an Ercol sofa & 2 arm chairs on there, that's amazing! they fit wonderfully in your wee cottage as well and really suit the style of the room! i see you too are a butterfly collector & what a fab collection you have! you can catch my little collection on the beginning of this Instagram video i did the other day:

    2. Thanks Kate, nice to know I'm not the only crazy hoarder who appreciates the fine boot sale pickings!

Sadly Channel 4 seem to have taken 'The House The 50s Built' off 4od, which is annoying they have just left this tantalising trailer up to taunt us with!

Fingers crossed the repeat it on more 4 or something.

Really glad I found your blog too, I followed the link Ercol put on their Facebook page!

  4. awwww Laura we've all been there! that can be the only down side of renting hey, inheriting the awful furniture they provide isn't always fun! since renting we've slowly picked up pieces of furniture, i think thats the best way to grow your collection especially if you want to spend a few extra £'s on pieces : )
