LOOK UP

last year whilst we were living in China, we realised we were missing out on an awful lot by the simple fact that we didn’t look up often enough. we were living and teaching in a small city called Hanshou in the Hunan province and we were the only two westerners living there; crazy to think about this now after nearly 1 year on!

whilst walking around Hanshou one day, we nipped into the usual supermarket to pick up our weekly supply of baozi and jaozi, and on exiting we both did something we clearly hadn't done in this area before and we looked up! yo our astonishment the word "COFFEE" was in huge letters on a long window. Now I know this is going to sound ridiculous but, believe me, when you've been living in a small city for 6 months that was starting to become the norm and are used to eating at the same restaurants, shopping in the same shops, craving the smallest ounce of normality from the western world...... to us it was like we had just discovered a gold mine! suddenly we had found one of our favourite restaurants/coffee house in the city and it was all because we had looked up. from this point on we made a conscious effort to look up where ever we went, without looking like penguins watching aeroplanes & bumping into lampposts’! i suddenly discovered an interesting world full of shapes, textures and inspiration that I had failed to see until now!

so here is one lesson I want to share with you, just look up for a day and see what you might have been missing out on, you might just be surprised.
